Let there be light!


As you know, I have been working on the miniature house these last few days, and just like in the beginning, I am finding myself not wanting to STOP, and with that comes the beginning of ELECTRICITY!!

From the start of the house construction, my plan was to install the Cir-Kit Tapewire system. The Cir-Kit Tapewire system, allows for all wires to be hidden out of sight, which means no fixture wires running all about and behind furniture pieces trying to hide them. In the end, achieving a very clean result…

The tapewire system is really like it says, tape, with two strips of “current” foils embedded, there is an adhesive backing, that allows the tapewire to stick to the various surfaces of your miniature house. The system might look very intimidating to you at first, however, if you study the system, you will discover, the system is really quite genius and fairly simply to install….

I started off by, placing furniture pieces in their desired locations, to then determine placement of light fixtures, I posted photos within the last post. Right now the house is scheduled to have 15 total lights, ranging from chandeliers, wall sconces, desk/table lights, picture/”art” lights and one exterior light. As I’m typing this, I just realized I didn’t included the picture/”art” lights! This is exactly what I mean, when I mentioned planning!

Once I determined the fixture location, I milled over the locations for a bit, as to make sure I wouldn’t run into the same problem I had with the wallpaper!

Having re-wired, installed and added receptacles in/to our “real life” house, I   have a pretty good understanding of how to install the electricity in the miniature house….

I will admit, I did make two phone calls to Cir-Kit, just to confirm a few things before I got started. Vern at Cir-Kit was helpful and was a delight to speak with, oh, and did I mention Vern is the owner!  Very nice man… Not that Vern would ever read this, but thank you Vern for your willingness to help.

I needed to decide where I wanted the transformer lead in wire (think “real life” electrical cord) to enter the house, I then I needed to drill a hole into the side of the house (photo 2). That was pretty hard to drill a hole into a perfectly untouched finished exterior wall. I quickly got over, as that hole is ultimately going to be responsible for the electricity to house the wire delivering the electricity into the house! The first photo (left to right) is the roll of Tapewire , Junction Splicer, Test Probe and Brads. The second and third photo, you can see the “clean” exterior hole and not so “clean” jagged interior entry hole, thats ok, the jagged area will corrected later. Photo 4, is the Lead Wire coming into the house from the exterior. Next, I ran the tapewire though a tiny gap where the wall(s) meets the ceiling, (photo 5) these tiny gaps are proving to be very helpful with running the tapewire from room to room. The gaps will eventually be covered with crown moldings. That is one of the many great thing about using the tapewire system, the tapewire can be covered with wallpaper, paint even crown moldings. Note, if you are planning on installing crown molding, you do not want to pierce the tapewire with a nail while installing the molding, work around the small area that has the tapewire.  After all, this is a miniature house and installing the crown molding will not require a lot of nails. Should you choose to install the Cir-Kit system, READ and RE-READ the instruction booklet, before you being, you can even call Vern! Also, each miniature house is constructed differently and you can adapt to what best works for your application. The Junction Splice, was installed next (photo 4) is what I would call the “breaker box” of the house, it is the small white box in photo, this is where the transformer lead in wire will connect to the inside of the house, to then carry the electrical current in and out to the “real life” wall receptacle (wall outlet). All of the tapewire installed throughout the house will be connected back to the Junction Splice. I will show you more photos when I start running the tapewire to other various locations within the house.

The last photo (6) shows the transformer lead wire connected to the junction splice and where I then used the test probe to “test” the connections to make sure everything was connected, I was SO HAPPY to see the test probe LIGHT UP!!!!

I know this post was a lot to digest, and I am sorry for that. What you need to know, you CAN and are capable of installing electricity in you miniature house. Do not be intimidated by the thought of installing electricity, the instruction booklet is very detailed for those whom have no experience and for those of you, like me who need a bit of confirmation, Vern is very helpful.

On another note, I have decided to only finish one room (the kitchen) entirely for the upcoming show competition, I will continue to finish the rest of the house after the show….. I only want to finish this house once and not regret hurrying the process and redoing things later down the road.  My plan is to temporally obstruct the remaining  windows and all other room openings for the show. I will share photos with you of what I mean, closer to the show date. Also, this will be my last post until I return home on April 18 after the show.  Oh, one more thing, my mom is going to the show with me!
